The Significance of the National Voters Day in India

To enlist more voters in the age group of 18, the Election Commission of India has declared 25, December as the National Voters Day.

The significance of the National Voters Day in India.

With a population of just over 120 million India can truly boast that it is undoubtedly the largest democracy in the world. But one cannot conclusively say or prove that India is the most successful democracy in the world.Really a big question mark lies ahead:-Whether India is really a democratic country.Having said that,it does not mean that India is paying only lip service to the term democracy.

India has the well defined institutions of democracy such as parliament doing the legislative function, a cabinet headed by the Prime Minister, doing the executive function and the Supreme Court of India and its subordinate courts doing the judicial function etc and all these three institutions are enshrined in the Constitution of India that came into force on 26, January, 1950.India has a multiparty system and the parties  actively participate in the election process which is conducted and supervised by the Election Commission of India, yet another independent constitutional body.Of course,  the constitution of India also empowers the people of India with some fundamental rights such as right to vote, right to speak and right to live etc.And so the people of India in whom the ultimate sovereign power lies actively participate in the democratic process of election to vote through which they elect the members of parliament from which the cabinet is formed as headed by the Prime Minister of India. Thus the democratic wheel is set into motion.

However the constitution of India will not take care of everything. We must take conscious steps to make democracy really meaningful and more successful besides making it more vibrant and strong. We must spread the awareness among the people of India so as to make them more responsible, disciplined besides encouraging them to actively participate in the democratic process which is the essence of democracy.

With the idea of spreading the awareness among the people of India and to move in the desired direction, the Election Commission of India has taken the right step of declaring 25, December as the National Voter's Day and henceforth the said day will be observed as National Voter's Day every year throughout India.Of course it was the day on which the Election Commission of India was actually born.Naturally 25, December has been rightly chosen as the National Voter's Day.

As decided by the Indian cabinet, the main objective of declaring 25,December as the National Voter's Day is to enlist more voters in the age group of 18, whose ignorance and apathy to get involved and participate in the democratic process has been the main concern of the Election Commission of India. Therefore, on the National Voter's Day, it is the duty of every citizen of India not only to spread the awareness about the democratic process of election in India but also to enlist more voters particularly in the age group of 18.Hence,  the Election Commissioner of each state has issued directions to all District Collectors to organise rallies to spread the awareness on the National Voters Day, besides issuing instant voter Id cards to the eligible voters in the age group of 18 and calling upon them to exercise their right to vote without fail during the elections.

The above mentioned programmes launched on 25, December, the National Voters Day will definitely help the cause of democracy in India and let us hope that the juggernaut of democracy can roll on for ever.
